Preparing for self storage: what to know before you move in

How to pack, protect and plan your belongings before your first visit to a self-storage unit.

2 min read

A little preparation makes your first visit to storage quicker and keeps your belongings in better condition. Here is what we suggest before you move in.

Choose your size and book

Start with our size guide to find a sensible size, then book through our online booking platform. The platform confirms the final price, details and terms before you pay.

Understand how access works

everstore™ is an unmanned facility with automated, smart access. Our state of the art keyless smart entry system is used for the facility entrance and individual unit doors, so there is no conventional key to collect. Facility access is 07:30–21:30, and customer service is available 24/7, 365 days a year if you need help.

Pack with storage in mind

  • Use strong boxes of similar sizes. They stack safely and make better use of the floor.
  • Fill boxes fully. Half-empty boxes can crush when stacked.
  • Wrap fragile items individually and mark boxes clearly.
  • Clean and dry everything. Make sure appliances, garden tools and furniture are clean and fully dry before storing.
  • Label all sides with contents and the room they belong to.

Plan the layout

Put larger furniture at the back and along the walls, heavier boxes at the bottom, and the things you will need most often at the front. Leave a small walkway if you will be visiting regularly.

Check what cannot be stored

Some items cannot be kept in self storage for safety and legal reasons. Read the full prohibited items section of our Terms & Conditions and your Storage Agreement before you pack, and ask us if you are unsure about anything.

Think about cover

Insurance for stored goods is arranged through our online booking platform. Please check the cover options and terms there before you move in.

Moving-in day

Use the loading areas and trolleys provided, and take advantage of the wide corridors. Business customers should note that we do not accept parcels or deliveries on your behalf.
